Replacing the Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF)

The DMF in many cars needs to be replaced each time the clutch needs changing. While this statement is not 100% correct based upon the durability of the component, we believe it certainly is in terms of practicality.

Unlike conventional solid flywheels, which can be easily and cheaply machined to ensure a smooth mating surface for your new clutch, a DMF cannot be easily machined and even if it could there are a number of internal components in a DMF which may need to be replaced. Therefore in practical terms most professionals recommend changing the DMF when changing the clutch. The problem is the price, which can be very expensive.

Should I install a Solid Flywheel Kit (DMR) to replace my Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF)?

In the automotive aftermarket, alternative solutions to replacing the DMF have been sort due to the prohibitive cost of replacing the DMF. One alternative is to replace the DMF with a solid flywheel.The solid flywheel, which is used to replace the DMF is commonly known as a Dual Mass Replacement Flywheel or DMR. This solid one-piece flywheel will tend to transmit more engine pulse (vibration) to the drive train. To combat this, the clutch kit provided with the DMR flywheel utilises a specifically designed  multi-rate clutch disc. The specification of the multi-rate clutch disc is vital to ensure the best possible DMF replacement product. When compared to the alternative of a standard or non multi-rate clutch disc, which some suppliers include in their solid flywheel replacement kits, the use of a wide angularity multi rate clutch disc as used in the DMR range, we believe to be the best price performance compromise available today.
